To those people who love summer, Grand Bend on the sandy shores of beautiful Lake Huron is a perfect get away spot. It is 222 kilometres west of Toronto; 121 kilometres north west of Kitchener and 178 kilometres north east of Detroit. One of the area biggest attractions is The Pinery Provincial Park, 8 kilometres to the south, which is known for its 6,330 acres of freshwater coastal dunes, Oak Savannah Forest and its one thousand camping spots. The Savannah is a transition zone between prairie grasslands and oak forests. It is all but gone elsewhere and the Pinery protects about fifty percent of the entire worlds remaining Oak Savannah.
Grand Bend’s population is about 2,000 people in the off season and is estimated to reach
50,000 people in the summertime. “The Bend” enjoys bragging rights to having thirty miles of
continuous beaches and warm waters in the summer and a sandy Lake bottom.
Its sunsets are often ranked as being in the top ten in the world!
What a great place to visit and have fun! Other beach areas and waterfront areas to discover include, but are not limited to, Port Franks and Ipperwash beach to the south and smaller beach areas going up to Bayfield and Goderich. Activities to enjoy include water and beach sports such as boating, sailing, swimming, parasailing, volleyball and sand castle making. Yes, there is some fishing, however the fishing is better going down to the Bluewater Bridge in Sarnia. Off beach things to do include such things as golfing, skydiving, flea markets, the Grand Bend Motorplex, the Huron County Playhouse, eateries and a new winery. Missing are things like public tennis courts and a Holiday Inn. Kincardine and Port Elgin to the north now have new Holiday Inns.
What a special summer playground! Families have been coming here for generations. This area, like many areas along the southern mid Lake Huron shoreline, has its fair share of seasonal campgrounds.
